The Team

 

Our committed and experienced team is geared to help you at every stage of your fencing education, from day one beginner to verteran of a hundred tournaments. In addition to their fencing qualifications all of our coaches have undergone emergency first aid and child protection training. They also all hold enhanced CRB certificates.

Lead Foil Coach – Mr Peter Russell

Peter is a FIE Diploma'd fencing master and studied in Germany under Andre Magro. He also holds additional coaching qualifications with both the British Academy and British Fencing Association. He has been coaching professionally for over 9 years and his students include numerous members of various Welsh and British Teams. Peter is also a qualified foil, epee and sabre referee, a BF Team Manager and a black belt in Taekwondo.

Lead Sabre Coach – Mrs Fran Russell

Fran Whalley

Fran is an FIE diploma'd sabre coach who studied in Hungary under Master Ioan Pop. Fran is primarily responsible for developing sabre in the club and her students regularly represent Wales and Great Britian on the international circuit. She is also a coach for Wales, and will be accompanying the first U15 team to Poland this year. Fran is also a qualified sabre referee and BF Team Manager. Alongside her coaching Fran is also a reguar competitor in Women's Sabre, and has represented Wales at the Senior 5 Nations numerous times.

Lead Epee Coach - Mr Neale Thomas


As a fencer Neale competed to World Cup level with GB between 1998 and 2002 and was Commonwealth Bronze medallist with Welsh Men's Epee team in 1998 & 2002. He started coaching in 2003 and in 2005 joined the GB cadet & junior Epee coaching team, travelling with GB squads to numerous international events as coach and official. In 2010/11 was invited to join the FIE coach education program, training under Olympic coach Octavian Zidaru in Zagreb and Budapest, gaining his FIE Maitre D’Armes. Between 2013-2016 Neale was appointed GB National Junior Coach. Has coached fencers to all levels from County through to National Champions. His fencers have represented GB at World Cup, Junior European and World Championships. As a coach attended more than 20 major championships (World, European and Commonwealth) between 2007 & 2016 and acted as Welsh Team Manager / Epee coach to the Commonwealth Junior Teams in Penang (2009) & Jersey (2012), and Welsh Senior Commonwealth Teams in Melbourne (2010) and Largs (2014).

Assistant Coach - Mr Luke Deamer

Luke is a level 2 BFA foil coach and has been fencing for 13 years. He has represented both England and Great Britain on the international circuit, including at the European cadet championships, and continues to train alongside his role as a coach. Luke is also a qualified foil referee.

Welfare Officer - Miss Rebecca Fouracre

Zach Clabon

Rebecca has been a foster carer for 4 years, had CP training aswell as paediatric first aid, health and safety at work and managing challenging behaviour. Her son, Morgan, has been at club for 2 years so she knows the Russell swords 'family' well and attends 3 sessions a week. She is available to discuss any issues, or welfare concerns in confidence either at club, or on the contact deatils here.
